2026 SC Region 1 Science Fair Program - Flipbook - Page 10
Dear Students, Teachers, and Families.
A warm and sincere welcome to each and every one of you at this year’s Region 1 Science Fair! Thank you for
being here today to participate in this day and support these students in their learning.
We are honored here at Southern Wesleyan University to be the annual host for this event. It is an honor to
serve the students and teachers from the surrounding Upstate area as they endeavor to delve deeper into
the full range of scientific disciplines, including engineering, physics, biology, among others.
Enrichment opportunities such as the Region 1 Science Fair are vital for our students. They offer future
doctors, astrophysicists, biologists, and other leaders the opportunity to go beyond the classroom- challenging, teaching, and inspiring them- to further pursuit of scientific study. We look forward to celebrating the
elementary, middle, and high school students at the Science Fair whose projects and presence here today
demonstrate commendable work ethic, superior creativity, and outstanding academic achievement.
To our teachers and families, thank you for the hard work that you do each day to care for your students.
From all of us here at Southern Wesleyan University, it is a privilege to partner with you in raising up the next generation of scientists.
Sincerely,
William D. Barker, Ph.D.

Dear Participants,
Welcome to the Southern Wesleyan University South Carolina Region 1 Science Fair!
The Southern Wesleyan University SC Region 1 Science is an annual event at the University serving students
from Anderson, Abbeville, Laurens, Greenville, Greenwood, Oconee, and Pickens Counties. Hosting the SC
Region 1 Science Fair manifests the SWU STeM mission to prepare students to confront globally important
issues in a rapidly changing world with skills in discipline-specific content, communication, information
processing, analysis, synthesis and problem solving.
The fair exhibits represent a variety of disciplines ranging from biology to physics to engineering with
participants representing the Elementary, Junior High, and High School grade levels. This exciting event
showcases the talents of our area students in all areas of STEM.
While our schools teach foundational knowledge, solving major world problems requires students to understand the practices of science.
The science fair encourages students to experience the practices of working scientists and engineers through research and design, guided
by teachers or mentors. The dedicated efforts of the Southern Wesleyan University STeM faculty and students partnering with regional
faculty, parents, and students promote the annual success of this amazing program and the accomplishments of the students.
Southern Wesleyan University faculty, staff, and students are honored and proud to welcome area participants to our campus as these young
scientists exhibit their talents.
Thank you for helping us to advance the next generation of science and engineering leaders.
Sincerely,
Robert L. McFarland, J.D.
Provost & Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs
